Hi! My name is Gabrielle Varela. I’m a mom, photographer and bartender (in that order) with restless leg syndrome and an art habit. Nice to meet you!

Drinking chicha, getting down with the locals in Peru.

I studied Visual Communications at the Savannah College of Art and Design in Savannah, Georgia. I had been taking my time there punctuating my attendance with long bouts of travel. Savannah is a magical city that has been finally receiving the attention it deserves. I miss it everyday. If you get the chance to visit, I know you will love it as much as I did:  “I Heart My City: Savannah”.

Here is a picture of my brother and I on River Street for St. Patrick’s Day in 2011. Savannah has one of the largest St. Paddy’s celebrations in the country.

In 2008 I was in a traumatic car accident that cut my time there short and rendered me blind in one eye. While this blog is not strictly travel-related, I won’t be writing about that here.

2011 was a chaotic and very blessed year. I was ping-ponging between independent projects I had in Boston and Washington D.C. where I was under contract for National Geographic Traveler.

Currently, I am kicking it in the Upper Valley of Vermont and New Hampshire as a photographer for Mountain View Publishing.

At National Geographic headquarters in Washington, D.C. with writer Nicolette Mallow and photographer Jimmy Chin at a reception to honor Chin’s work.

Anything else? Hmm, favorite food: steak or popcorn, its a tie. Color: green.  Movie: The Great Escape. I don’t have a favorite place, just a favorite thing about each place.  I devour books.

First catch ever fishing and photographing with Captain John Galvin and Nat Chalkley of Woods Hole, MA.
